Description:

There are many beautifully situated distilleries in Scotland but few can surpass the sight of Speyburn sitting majestically in a corner of the Spey valley at the foot of the densely wooded hills on the outskirts of the quiet Highland town of Rothes. Designed by the famous distillery architect, Charles Doig of Elgin, Speyburn is reputed to be the most photographed distillery in Scotland. The most distinctive feature of Speyburn is its two and three storey buildings which use the sloping three acre site to best effect. With its impressive elevations and traditional pagoda stretching skywards, to this day Speyburn still commands an imposing aspect in the Glen of Rothes.

Additional Information:

Distilled in the famous Speyside region of the Scottish Highlands, Speyburn Single Malt Scotch Whisky was first produced on the 15th December 1897. The distillery was built from carved stone taken from the former bed of the River Spey. When production first started, the still house has not yet been fitted with windows or doors; and as a fierce snowstorm was sweeping through the valley the men had to work in overcoats. The distillers were anxious to have some casks filled bearing the date 1897 because this was the diamond jubilee year of Queen Victoria - just one butt was bonded. Speyburn was the first Scottish Malt Distillery to install a stream-driven mechanical malting system The distillery is know as ' The Gibbet' because of its situation near the ancient ' Cnock na Croiche' or Hillock of the Gibbet' The first manager was Mr John Smith who held his position for 31 years
